The miata is a one year old car that is under warranty and the s2000 is a seven year old car out of warranty. I think there is a reason they use them at Driving Schools. Also, and this may have changed, the power at the wheels on an RX-8 is not even close to the shaft horsepower. Now, there will be losses in the Miata as well, but you may be able to get more wheel HP on the miata with smaller engine mods.
